An Iban engagement

An Iban engagement,what's required.Aside from the golden advices.

The dowry  includes & its legends:

Floor Mat [tikar] ; To be used when you've got guests,
The Cloths [kain] : To be used to sew cloths for your future kids,bedding & household curtains,
The Ceramic Pots [tajau] :  For storage used of harvest & wild jungle produce.Contains rice & rice wine
The Machete [Parang]: To be used to clear lands/ cutting meat,
The Axe [kapak] : To shape, split and cut wood to harvest timber to build houses
The Betel leaf  [daun sirih] & Cigarettes [Rokok] : I am not sure of this.

A pair of  Tajau - Ceramic Pot filled with rice wine [Tuak]

The dowry 

Just like any traditional engagement/ wedding, there's always a game. A team of 10 people is form from both bride & groom side.The Tajau which contains the rice wine is given to each team. The team whom finished the the faster wins.

During the era of the headhunters, the Dayak men of this time were covered with a visual canopy of the creatures and plants that lived within their jungle domain. However, and when combined together, tattoos performed as an indelible form of camouflage acting upon the malevolent forces encountered in the jungle - headhunters and evil spirits.Just as a great warrior was tattooed to mark his achievements in the human hunt, so did He.

What's a celebration if it didnt end with drinking & dancing :)

Bountiful Tribute to Harvest Festival @ Grand Margherita, Kuching

Grand Margherita Hotel is having a bountiful Harvest Festival of local delicacies for the month of June.

One of top 10 delicacies of Sarawak- The Pansuh; Fresh meat cooked in bamboo with water & seasoned ingredients.

The Kueh Tebeduk - Rice pudding made from rice flour,coconut milk and palm sugar (gula apong)

Top: Wild ferns [midin & paku] saute with chilli & prawn paste [belacan] 

Bottom: Preserved cat fish & venison in salt aka Kasam Ikien/ Kasam Jerak

 Sukui Bandung - Tapioca topped with shredded coconut

What's not to love lobster's love- my all time favorite! =)

Air Ijok - Have you heard of it before?

Have you heard of air Ijok?

Taste somewhat sour, and nor unlike heavily hopped beer neither smooth like the Guinness stout. Taste better if taken during early dawn it is said.

Produced by the Ijok tree which happen to look like a palm tree too.When asked if it was, they said not.

 

 Simple tools needed for used in extracting of air Ijok

A tree barks[of i don't know what tree] were used for that exquisite taste of air Ijok.

I,of cause made the climb up to the 'platform'! *insert champion emoticon*

I'm on the 'platform' partying with the red ants on the branches without any safety harness or safety nets beneath .

Balai Ringin - Raided!

How was your Gawai? I made a roadtrip to Balai Ringin over the weekend for an Iban wedding. An hour drive from Serian town along the Pan-Borneo Highway. While some claim Balai Ringin is under Simunjan territory as well.

 What does the kampung in almost every household had that the city doesn't have?

Just woods & mountain water as utilities.

Lemang - glutinous rice cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick.

This cooking method using bamboo stick is popular not only in the Iban Dayak tribe but also adapted by the other tribes of Borneo island.

The Changs- made of glutinous rice usually stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in reed leaves

But this Chang, wasnt fill with any fillings. It had a slight bitter taste to it.[yes, it is yellow in colour]

The Penanang aka kuih Sarang Semut is my all time favorite!

The kuih bunga is another all time favourite! *nyummm!*

Both best paired with hot steaming black coffee/tea or if there is an occasion, then tuak is served room temperature ;)

The post mortem of Tomorrow's Leader Summit'11

The summit were held 2 days at BCCK- Kuching,exclude the gala dinner which was on Friday evening.

It was a decent crowd of different cluster of people in a hall.

There are 2 kind of people- 1 who wants to make a different while the other 1 can't be bother.

The people whom wants to make a different,doesn't necessary needs paper to prove it but their capabilities in getting it done matters.

“You cannot learn everything not because you are not capable of but it’s impossible! When you need some specialize work, that’s when network came useful...” said Sharifah from Face2Face Technology.

Ms. Gayatri Su Lin, speaker for film making of Tayangan Unggul was sharing her day to day kind of job requires & what got her where she is today. Those who hasn't hear of her, go google her. Be amazed at the films produced by her!

With Malaysian fashion designer Faisol Abdullah of Jendela Batik, speaker for Fashion.

 

Whether or not the summit was a success, its up to individual to analyze.But do keep in mind, its an event created by Man, not by God- whereas it could have been perfect enough. I was there as a participant. I observed and received input/ insight and to learn what's essential.Not forgetting, an unique friendship has been made along the way.
